More on Equipment – Cavesson

Spanish Serreta/Cavesson
Spanish Serreta/Cavesson

Gerd recommended a Spanish style cavesson.  It had a curved metal piece wrapped in leather with 3 rings to fit over the nose and was jointed on the side.  Unlike mine, which is jointed over the nose and has lots of leather padding under the brass fittings.  I’m not sure I’m clear on the difference between the cavesson and the serreta.  “Serreta” seems to imply “serrations”, but this nosepiece was smooth.  The solid metal bar at first seems a bit harsh, but upon further inspection, it stays put on the nose better and allows a more sensitive feel on the line.  Much like a bit – it’s all in the hands that use it.

I found this one at Animo Ruitersport for $75.81 (+ shipping from the Netherlands!).  Wish I could see the rest of the headstall, but the nosepiece is the “right” one.

Another option: El Silencio Spanish & Portugese Tack in West Virginia.  Choice of 2 @ $128 or $55. Be sure to check back on the main page because there may be exchange rate price adjustments.

And another: The Baroque Horse Store (Equine Design) in California @ $85.
